Elasticity
Their elasticity is exceptional with elongation at break values in the 300-450% range or higher for products like POINT 301 PU METAL & WOOD FIX.
This elasticity allows the joint to absorb vibration, movement and thermal expansion or contraction without cracking.
Multi-substrate Bonding
Important practical strength of polyurethane adhesives is their ability to form strong bonds with a wide variety of substrates: wood, metal, concrete, stone, plastics, polyurethane foam, and composites alike.
Reduced Need for Drilling
PU adhesives often eliminate the need for screws or nails in applications where bond strength, flexibility and load distribution are more important than sheer mechanical clamping. It improves aesthetics and reduces the need for drilling and post-installation cleanup.
Limitations
- Moisture Sensitivity: Exposure to humidity before use can start curing inside the container; store in sealed containers in dry conditions.
- Longer Curing Time: Full strength develops over hours or days depending on temperature, humidity, and adhesive thickness; temporary support may be required.
- Health & Safety: Some products contain isocyanates. Always use gloves, eye protection and ensure appropriate ventilation during application.
Application of Polyurethane Adhesives
Polyurethane Adhesives in Construction
PU adhesives are widely used in the building and construction areas due to their high strength, flexibility and moisture resistance.
- Flooring: Securely bonds wood, laminate, or composite flooring to sub-floors, accommodating expansion and contraction caused by temperature and humidity changes.
- Panel Bonding: Joins structural panels, wall claddings, and insulating boards, eliminating the need for mechanical fasteners while maintaining vibration-resistant joints.
- Insulation: Bonds foam boards and insulating panels, maintaining adhesion under changing environmental conditions.
PU Adhesives for Automotive Uses
The automotive sector relies heavily on polyurethane adhesives interior trim, windshield installation and composite assembly.
- Interior Trim: Bonds dashboards, panels, and trims while absorbing vibrations and reducing noise.
- Windshield Bonding: Moisture-curing ensure safety with high load-bearing strength and elasticity.
- Composite Assembly: Joins metals, plastics, and composite materials, enabling lightweight and durable construction.
Polyurethane-based Adhesives for Woodworking
Polyurethane adhesives are commonly used in furniture manufacturing and wood assembly due to their excellent bonding with natural materials and engineered wood.
- Furniture: Strong, durable bonds ensure structural integrity in tables, chairs, and cabinets.
- Laminates & Veneers: Flexible PU adhesives prevent peeling, cracking, or delamination under stress or humidity.
- Edge Bonding: Ideal for joining wooden panels, edges, and trims where clean, invisible joints are important.
Specialized Applications of PU Adhesives
Used in footwear, electronics, packaging and marine industries.
- Footwear: Bonding soles to uppers, providing flexibility and shock absorption.
- Electronics: Secures components, potting, and encapsulating devices with insulation and vibration damping.
- Packaging: Seals cartons, composite packaging materials, and foam inserts with strong, elastic bonding.
- Marine: Bonds boat interiors, deck fittings, and composite panels with water and chemical resistance.
Polyurethane Adhesives in Industrial Assembly
Polyurethane-based adhesives are increasingly used in general industrial assembly because of their ability to bond dissimilar materials and often replace mechanical fasteners.
- Load Distribution: Spreads stress across the bond line, reducing material fatigue.
- Vibration and Impact Resistance: Ensures durability in machinery, appliances, and structural components.
